In the beautifully restored Boston Opera House, at 7: 30pm, we were entertained by a talented troupe, including Roger Bart (Dr. Frankenstein), Rye Mullis (your monster), Cory Native english speakers (Igor), Brad Oscar (the Inspector), Beth Cury (At the), Joanna Glushak (Frau Blucher), together with Ann Horak (Inga). For all those who remember the vintage Mel Brooks movie with the ensemble cast including Gene Wilder, Teri Garr, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Chris Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Kenneth Mars, together with Gene Hackman, living as much these performances was no easy task. As you may recall, Mel Brooks shot the picture in non colored documents as a throwback to the horror film genre of a bygone era. And entire, the reinvented and colorful theater version held up quite well.

This play was highly interesting, with strong performances just by Bart (Frankenstein), Horak (Inga) British (Igor), further embellished by Cury’s rich voice in addition to a superb dancing ensemble. If Bart looks familiar to help anyone, you may have witnessed him as the scheming pharmacologist on Desperate Housewives, or from the many Broadway shows she has performed in through the years. The actors, however, were somewhat upstaged by way of the staging, impressive and interesting, well timed and perfectly executed, the staging has been beautifully done. Act An individual, Scene Ten, Your Laboratory , featured Frankenstein’s operating bench rising skyward replete with impressive lightning (or at least lighting) effects, in conjunction with Robert Billig and his orchestra.

Some of the best numbers of the evening included, “The Brain”, “Puttin’ to the Ritz”, and one of my favorites, a language in cheek rendition associated with “Deep Love”, the latter which and was not subtle, but classic Mel Brooks comedy nonetheless. On occasion, I recently found the production to end up overdone, over reaching and over the top. Some of the characterization was a great deal larger than life, that this humor was somewhat telegraphed, each time a more subtle approach can have yielded a better result. Overall, however, this new version of the classic Young Frankenstein can be a must see for any theater buff or Mel Brooks fan.
